* Tagetes erecta L. and Calendula officinalis contain triterpenoid esters and the carotenoids flavoxanthin and other carotenoids, mostly zeaxanthin, lutein and beta-carotene. Plant extracts are also widely used by cosmetics, presumably due to presence of compounds such as saponins, resins, and essential oils.
* Zeaxanthin is one of the most common carotenoid alcohols found in nature.
The human retina accumulates lutein and zeaxanthin. The latter predominates at the macula lutea while lutein predominates elsewhere in the retina.
* Several observational studies have provided preliminary evidence for high
dietary intake of foods including zeaxanthin with lower incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), most notably the Age-Related Eye Disease
Study.
