Arabinose, also known as aldose and pectin sugar, is a kind of aldopentose: a monosaccharide containing 5 carbon atoms and having an aldehyde group. Molecular formula C5H10O5, molecular weight 150.131. Arabinose is named after it was first isolated from gum arabic. Natural L-arabinose widely exists in food, usually combined with other monosaccharides, and exists in pectin, hemicellulose, pectic acid, bacterial polysaccharides and some glycosides in the form of heteropolysaccharides. D-arabinose is usually obtained by artificial synthesis, which is rarely seen in nature, and occasionally found in some cells of Escherichia coli or Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
