What is
Tert-Butylhydroquinone ?
Tert-butylhydroquinone (also known as tert-butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ) is made by adding a tert-butylhydroquinone to it. White to light gray crystalline or crystalline powder. Suitable and highly unsaturated oil, such as sunflower oil, etc. For cooking oil and baking products, it should be used in combination with BHA, but it is suitable for frying products. Boiling point 295ºC, melting point 126.5~128.5ºC. It has anti-spoilage effect on most oils, especially vegetable oils. Application of Tert-Butylhydroquinone
Tert-butylhydroquinone is a powerful antioxidant. In food, tert-butylhydroquinone is used as an antioxidant
in vegetable oils and many food animal fats. It does not change color when exposed to iron, nor does it
change the taste or smell of food. It can also be used with other preservatives such as butyl hydroxyanisole
(BHA). Its E code as a food additive is E319. It is widely used in food because of its extended shelf life.
Function of Tert-Butylhydroquinone
Superior antioxidant properties, than BHT, BHA, PG (propyl gallate) and vitamin E has stronger antioxidant
capacity; It can effectively inhibit the growth of Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli,
short pneumogenes and other bacteria as well as aspergillus Niger, Aspergillus variegatus, Aspergillus flavus
and other microorganisms. The antioxidant function of TBHQ is much better than that of conventional antioxidants.
The antioxidant capacity of vegetable oil was TBHQ> PG> BHT> BHA. The addition of TBHQ to food
can not only delay the oxidation and deterioration of oils, but also inhibit a variety of microorganisms. Can be
used in edible oil, fried food, dried fish products, biscuits, instant noodles, instant cooking rice, canned dried fruit,
