Nowadays, plywood is preferred over solid wood as plywood overcomes all the drawbacks of solid wood like warping, shrinking, and being vulnerable to moisture. Plywood Manufacturing Process
Green process, debarking Upon the arrival of logs to the plywood mill, the green logs are stored in pond storage or cold deck, where the logs are sprayed with water. After which, the logs are debarked and "cut into specifically sized blocks". The bark generated is usually used as fuel.
Green process, log conditioning and veneer peeling Utilizing spray chambers or hot water vats, the logs are conditioned via heat and moisture. The conditioned logs are then cut into veneers with a veneer lathe. Afterwards, with a veneer clipper, the pieces of veneer are "cut to size" . Furthermore, the veneer is sorted based on size, species, grade, heartwood and sapwood
Veneer drying Through the drying process, the moisture content of green veneers is reduced to its target moisture content ranging from approximately 1% to 15%. There are essentially two types of dryers employed in the industry, longitudinal veneer dryers that "circulates air parallel to the veneer" and jet dryers that use "direct hot, high-velocity air (...) to create (...) a turbulent flow of air" on the veneer surface. Two types of heat generation are available in veneer dryers, direct-fired or indirect-heated. Direct-fired dryers generate heat through the combustion of "gas or wood" in a boiler to produce hot gases. For indirect gas dryers, steam coils warm the air circulating on the veneer surface. Alternatively, mills may also employ veneer kilns to dry veneers as well.
Veneer layup and pressing Through resin applicators such as curtain coaters or roll spreaders, the commonly used phenol formaldehyde (exterior applications) and urea-formaldehyde (interior applications) resins are spread along one side of a veneer. Depending on the end product, the three or five veneers will be symmetrically and grain alternating laid into one panel before it's sent to the hot press. Pressing temperatures typically range between 132o C and 165o C for softwood plywood and 107o C and 135o C for hardwood plywood. These high pressing temperatures are needed to activate the thermosetting resins.
Finishing Lastly, the panels are trimmed to final dimensions and finished to customer preference. Automated sanders along with pneumatic dust collectors are employed for the finishing process

7.OSB is particularly appropriate for load-bearing applications in construction due to the structure of strands within its panels and high mechanical properties.
8.It is commonly used for roof decking, wall sheathing, flooring and can also be used as a wood-based panel product.
9.Large quantities of OSB 3 are also used in site hoardings and pallet tops as well as industrial packaging and sarking. For ease of use it can be cut by a hand or power saw and machined (routed, spindled, planed and bored) with common wood working machinery. When using powered tools it is recommended that Tungsten carbide cutting edges are used.
