Process:
Boron trichloride is produced by reacting together one of the following sets of ingredients. In each case the reaction requires elevated temperatures.
a) Finely divided carbon plus boric acid and chlorine
b) Boric oxide plus the chloride of either sodium, potassium or lithium
c) Sodium boronfluoride plus magnesium chloride
d) Boron carbide plus chlorine

1. a chemical reagent in the pharmaceutical industry

4. a refractory coating on such articles as crucibles etc.
5. the starting material for the production of boron nitride
6. in refining metals such as aluminum, magnesium, zinc, and copper alloys
7. clean up castings of these metals
8. the production of optical fibers
