Polyglycolic acid is a crystalline polymer with a crystallinity of 46-52%, a density of 1.5-1.64g/cm3, a glass transition temperature of about 36 ºC, and a melting point of about 224 ºC. High molecular weight polyglycolic acid has good mechanical properties.

The synthesis of PGA usually adopts a two-step ring opening method, which involves first preparing glycolic acid into glycolide, and then opening the ring of glycolide to produce PGA. Another reported method is the melt/solid phase polycondensation method, which first prepares oligomers in a molten state, then breaks them up and undergoes solid phase polycondensation to prepare high relative molecular weight PGA. The original raw material of polyglycolic acid is glycolic acid, which is widely found in nature, especially in sugarcane, sugar beet and immature grape juice. Due to the high difficulty of separation and purification, it is currently obtained through organic synthesis methods in industry.
