Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic. It has a killing effect on anaerobic microorganisms. It is generated when it is reduced in the human body. The metabolites also have anti-anaerobic effects, inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial DNA, thereby interfering with the growth and reproduction of bacteria, and eventually causing bacterial death. Anti-anaerobic bacteria include: Bacteroides fragilis and Fusobacterium (due to the sharp ends of the bacteria shape Fusiform), Bacillus tetani, Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, Giardia.
