Product Description

Sialic acid is the general term for a class of derivatives in which the amino acid or hydroxyl hydrogen in neuraminic acid is substituted, and usually refers to one of the most important members of this class of compounds, N-acetylneuraminic acid. Sialic acid is widely present in animal tissues, and is also distributed in a small amount in other organisms, mainly as a component of glycoproteins and gangliosides. The sialic acid substituent is usually acetyl or hydroxyacetyl, but sialic acid in which the amino group is substituted by methyl, sulfate, or phosphate has also been found.
