Idrossido di sodio, formula chimica è NaOH, comunemente noto come soda caustica, soda caustica, soda caustica, quando dissolta, emette sapore di ammoniaca, è un alcale forte altamente corrosivo, generalmente in forma di foglio o di particelle, facile da dissolvere in acqua (rilascio di calore quando dissolto in acqua) e formare soluzione alcalina, e delissabilità, facile da assorbire vapore acqueo nell'aria (delixation) e biossido di carbonio (metamorfismo). NaOH è una delle sostanze chimiche necessarie nei laboratori chimici e una delle sostanze chimiche più comuni. I prodotti puri sono cristalli incolore e trasparenti. Densità 2,130 g/cm³. Punto di fusione 318.4ºC. Punto di ebollizione 1390ºC.  
L'idrossido di sodio può essere usato come detergente alcalino nel trattamento dell'acqua, solubile in etanolo e glicerolo; insolubile in propanolo ed etere. Ha anche un effetto corrosivo sul carbonio sodico ad alta temperatura. Reazione di sproporzionamento con cloro, bromo, iodio e altri alogeno. Neutralizza con acidi per produrre sale e acqua.
