With the development of the steelmaking industry, electric furnace smelting from ordinary power electric furnace steelmaking to high power electric furnace steelmaking, and then developed into ultra-high power (UHP) electric furnace steelmaking, UHP graphite electrode market demand is increasing, the use of ultra-high power electric arc furnace graphite electrode performance requirements are also increasingly high. It is reported that the ultra-high power electric furnace smelting per ton of steel can save more than 22 percent of electricity, smelting time can be shortened by 50 percent, output can be increased by 1.5 times. At present, this method has become the main method of electric furnace steelmaking in the world.
The main raw materials of UHP graphite electrode include needle coke, binder pitch and impregnated pitch. High quality raw materials are the prerequisite for producing UHP graphite electrodes, and the quality of raw materials must be guaranteed to be homogeneous and stable.
Needle coke
As the main raw material for the production of UHP graphite electrode, the performance of needle coke has a direct relationship with the physical and chemical indexes of the finished electrode and the actual use effect. There are two kinds of needle coke, petroleum and coal. At present, the United States, Britain and Japan are the main countries producing petroleum needle coke, while the coal needle coke is mainly produced by Japan and China. At present, the global production of needle coke is about 1200kt/a, and China's production is about 240kt/a, 80% ~ 90% of which depends on imports. Studies have shown that, because coal measures needle coke fiber is thicker, in the graphitization process it is easy to cause "crystal expansion", followed by coal measures needle coke particles between the empty and small, the binder is not easy to immerse, so the intensity of coal measures needle coke is generally lower than that of petroleum. Therefore, coal measure needle coke is suitable for producing HP graphite electrode, and petroleum measure needle coke is more suitable for producing UHP graphite electrode. It is suggested to use petroleum needle coke as the main raw material for producing UHP graphite electrode.
