Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, itching eyes/nose, sneezing, hives, and itching. It works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. This medication also blocks another natural substance in your body (serotonin).
Function
Has been used in the management of moderate to severe cases of serotonin syndrome (a complex of symptoms associated with the use of serotonergic drugs, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and monoamine oxidase inhibitors), and in cases of hyperserotoninaemia resulting from a serotonin producing carcinoid tumour
Can also be used as a preventive measure against migraine in children and adolescents.
Can relieve SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction and drug-induced hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
Also used in the treatment of cyclical vomiting syndrome and to stimulate the appetite.
Cyproheptadine is a second line treatment for pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction in horses.
