Fluvoxamine is an antidepressant which functions as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Fluvoxamine was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993 for the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Fluvoxamine CR (controlled release) is approved to treat social anxiety disorder. Fluvoxamine is also prescribed to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Fluvoxamine maleate is a selective SR (serotonin reputake) inhibitor. Fluvoxamine is described to bind the human 5-HT transporter protein with high affinity (Ki = 1.6 nM) while demonstrating very low affinity at the norepinephrine transporter (Ki = 2,950 nM). Fluvoxamine maleate is a xigema Receptor agonist.
