Adenine (formerly known as vitamin B4) is a purine that has many different functions in biochemistry. In cellular respiration, it acts as an energy-rich adenosine triphosphate (ATP), as well as in the cofactors Chemicalbook nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). It also acts as a component of DNA and RNA in the process of protein biosynthesis. Adenine is a component of nucleic acid and is involved in RNA and DNA synthesis in living organisms. It promotes leukocyte proliferation when leukocytes are deficient and is used to combat leukopenia and is also used in acute granulocytopenia.
