Banaba is a medicinal plant that grows in the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and South China. Much of the current research on banaba has been done in China. Banaba extract comes from the leaf of Lagerstroemia Speciosa. The main active ingredient is corosolic acid, a terpenoid compound known to stimulate glucose transport across cell membranes. Leaves of the plant Lagerstroemia speciosa have been used as a folk medicine for treatment of diabetes and kidney diseases.
In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that corosolic acid promoted the absorption and utilization of glucose by stimulating glucose transport, thus achieving its hypoglycemic effect. Corosolic acid is also referred to as plant in sulin because its excitatory effect on glucose transport is similar to in sulin. The results of animal experiments showed that corosolic acid had significant hypoglycemic effect on normal rats and genetically modified diabetic mice. Corosolic acid also plays a role in weight loss. A series of clinical studies have found that after taking corosolic acid, in sulin and blood glucose levels in the body can be adjusted, and there is an obvious trend of weight loss (average weight loss of 0.908-1.816kg per month). This process is relatively slow and does not require dieting. Corosolic acid also has a variety of other biological activities, such as significant inhibition of TPA-induced inflammatory response, its anti-inflammatory effect is stronger than the commercial anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin. It also has DNA polymerase inhibitory activity and has inhibitory effect on the growth of a variety of tumor cells.
